The rugby season got off to the perfect start last weekend with fixtures against Monkton Combe. The 1st XV had a convincing win, 34-17. The game was split into four quarters with West Buckland fielding 23 players in what was a strong squad performance.
It could be argued that the score line flattered the home side, however it was great to see the team's desire and grit to grind out the result in what was a tightly contested game.
Notable performers included Jack Chapman with three tries, Tom Dewhurst who worked tirelessly in the loose and Harry Sampson who controlled the pace of the game well.
The U16s won a close battle 29-24, showing good physicality and organisation, and enjoying a lot of possession and territory. They also showed great spirit to come from behind twice and win the game with two late tries in the final quarter.
