u13 cricket devon cup

The U13 Cricket team have reached the finals of the Devon County Cup competition, after a closely fought victory against Exeter School on Friday.  The team will play either Torquay Grammar School or Mount Kelly in the final, to be played on Wednesday.

Exeter batted first and reached 138 -7 with Sion Grand taking an excellent 5 wickets for just 11 runs, accompanied by some really good fielding.

West Buckland then produced a very solid top order batting performance, with Henry Cooper reaching 53 not out as the team reached their target of 139 for 3 with just three balls remaining.

The team will play the final at Sandford Cricket Club from 1pm on Wednesday and will find out who they face later today.

Four Year 9 pupils visited Park School in Barnstaple, along with a number of other secondary schools, to take part in this year’s Carnegie Shadowing Event. All the schools will have been shadowing the shortlist of this prestigious children’s book award since the list was announced in March. The Schools Library Service who organise the event then give each school one book off the shortlist to make a presentation on.

This year West Buckland were presenting on Wolf Hollow by Lauren Wolk. Alfie Howard, Rebecca Hassall, Charlotte Turner and Katie Woods produced a fantastic presentation on why the book should win as they had all read and enjoyed the book. Before and after the presentations we were treated to an author talk from children’s author Emma Carroll (pictured here with our team) whose new book Letters from the Lighthouse was Waterstones Book of the Month in May this year.

Nature At Its Cleverest

These may look like two twigs, but in fact, whilst one is, indeed, a twig, the other is a buff tip moth!

These, and other exciting discoveries, were just part of the Reception and Prep 1 children's fascinating day studying moths that they had caught in the moth net.  Learning about their life cycles, bodies, food and camouflage, the children also had a chance to handle the moths and see their markings and clever body forms up close.

Many thanks to Head of Biology, Noah Shawcross, for providing such an interesting session for the children.

athletics news

Four of our team of eighteen athletes who qualified for, and took part in, the County Athletics Championships last weekend, have come away as County Champions.

Anna Wilson (Javelin, Minor Girls); Ed Broggio (Javelin, Minor Boys); Sion Grand (Shot, Minor Boys) and Ella Clifton (Triple Jump, Inter Girls) beat some very tough opposition to win their sections and take the Devon titles.

Overall, West Buckland was very well represented across all ages and all disciplines, having competed extremely well at the North Devon Championships earlier in the term.
