A-level performance has been consistently excellent over many years, establishing West Buckland as the highest performing co-educational boarding school in the South West peninsula.
- 2018 A* to A: 47.8% (national average 26.4%)
- 2018 A* to B: 78.6% (national average 51.3% - tbc)
- In 2018 three quarters of subjects produced at least 75% A* to B
- 80% of Further Mathematics grades were A* to A
Our consistently excellent results at A-level enable the majority of West Buckland sixth formers to progress to some of the best universities and Higher Education courses available.
This is particularly impressive taking into consideration the breadth of entry into our sixth form. Unlike many other independent schools, West Buckland is largely non-selective, requiring only a modest requirement at GCSE for entry into the sixth form. Our first-class teaching and personal support, alongside outstanding HE advice, enables them, often, to surpass their own expectations.
The ‘added value’ that we offer is, therefore, unquestionable.
Our GCSE results over many years have consistently placed us amongst the top performing schools in the South West of England.
The 2018 exams predominantly featured exams graded under the new numerical grading scale of 9-1, with the highest award a 9. Notable statistics include:
- In mathematics over 95% of pupils achieve a standard pass or above
- 53.1% of all grades were passed at 9-7/A*-A
- 23% of students achieved ALL 9-7/A*-A
- Two students achieved ALL 9s, putting them in an exclusive club of only 732 in the country
Our policy of welcoming students to the school who can aspire to five or more C grades at GCSE means that we have a broad entry. Our excellent results are testament to the quality of teaching and care for students and their hard work and application.
Our teachers are as delighted by the student who has exceeded expectations with perhaps six or seven GCSEs at B or C grade as they are for the student who achieves at the very highest levels. Over many years, our record of adding value to pupils’ performance at all levels is consistently positive.
Our options system and exam entry policies reflect well our desire to give students the opportunities to succeed across a broad range of subjects. Our approach is certainly not influenced by any attempt to maximise our position in the so-called 'league tables'. While we are delighted by the achievements of the majority of our students who earn large numbers of A and A* grades, we do not allow this measure to distort educational judgements for all of our boys and girls.
