Following on from the winning the Devon boys’ U15 Division 1 League in the National Schools' Tennis competition in the summer, West Buckland had a fantastic, nail-biting, win against Truro School in the Regional knock-out rounds in Newquay on Friday 30th September to become Champions of Devon and Cornwall.
Playing at the Heron Tennis Centre in Newquay, the West Buckland team knew that they were in for a tight battle against the highly-ranked team from Truro.
Tom Whiteley opened up with a tough singles game, going down 3-6 6-2 8-10 in the tie break. Jack Prickett and Sacha Chunilal-Moberley also lost their singles games but with Harry Sampson winning his 6-1 6-2, the boys went into the doubles round 3-1 matches down.
However, the boys knew that doubles is their strength and consequently saw a turn-around of fortune.
Tom and Harry won their match 6-2 6-1 and Sacha and Jack kept their nerve, winning 6-1 4-6 10-8 in the tie break.
Tied at 3-3, tensions were high and a championship tie break needed to be played to settle the fixture. Using one player from each pair, the West Buckland boys kept excellent focus, finally prevailing 10-6, emulating the success of the girls’ team last year, in becoming Regional Champions.
The boys will meet Millfield School in the next round and will play the match at the Tarka Tennis Centre in Barnstaple.
