The recent rugby tour to Holland was a terrific success and the teams came away with a clean sweep of wins from all their games, which had consequences for the accompanying staff, as Head of Rugby Domonic Ford explains:
The tour set out on Wednesday 19th October with 22 boys from Years 8 and 9, plus three members of staff. We made our way to Hull for the overnight crossing to Rotterdam. The first matches were against “The Ducks” and “The Dukes” in 20 minute match format. Some excellent support play meant that both matches resulted in comfortable wins for our teams. At this point, Mr Allin laid down the challenge to the boys that the staff wouldn’t shave until they lost. The following day was spent going bowling and eating Dutch pancakes followed by another game against Haarlem near Amsterdam. Although slightly tougher opposition, the boys still come out as winners and the beard growing contest was on!
The last game was against “Haagst”, the oldest and largest club in Holland, which resulted in another win and meant that boys were unbeaten on tour. The last day in Holland was spent Go Karting and sightseeing in Rotterdam followed by an overnight trip on the ferry back to Hull and the long journey back to West Buckland. As promised the staff still had beards until the return to school a week later.
The boys all really enjoyed themselves and played some excellent rugby throughout the tour whilst learning a great deal about their host country. More photos are available on Facebook.
