Our Sixth Form Dissection Club yesterday received a very special visit from Orthopaedic Surgeon, Mr Luke Brunton, who was able to pass on his expertise in surgical techniques, using a joint of pork!

The techniques the students learned included how to use a scalpel, how to close a wound with surgical needles and different types of suture (absorbable vs non-absorbable) and how to tie various surgical knots.

Mr Brunton, who, as well as being a West Buckland parent, is a surgeon at North Devon District Hospital, and we were very grateful to him for giving up his time to come and talk to the students.

Dissection Club is one of the academic clubs offered to Sixth Formers, as part of the school's Medical Society, helping students who are looking at a possible career in medicine-related careers.
