Bursary Programme

100% Bursary Programme

Our bursary programme is unusual, if not unique, in the south west in its offer of fully funded rolling bursaries.

Year 7

Each year, two means-tested 100% bursaries will be awarded from Year 7 through to and including Year 11. The first recipients started at the school in September 2012. Currently the Foundation, supported by the School is funding 15 pupils through the School. As decisions are made annually for a Year 7 intake, the Trustees will only accept applications for pupils currently in Year 6. You must be a permanent resident within North Devon or Torridge district council areas or Exmoor National Park and not have the financial means to send any of your children to West Buckland School.

Each year, one of the bursaries will be awarded to a child whose parents derive their main income from, or in connection with, the rural economy. This award is entitled the Fortescue-Bristow Bursary. This will be awarded where the family’s main income is from, or in connection with, the rural economy and the family is resident within the North Devon Council area (excluding Barnstaple or Ilfracombe Town Council areas) or Exmoor National Park.

Applicants must meet the school’s academic entrance criteria through sitting an assessment in January. Short listed applicants will be visited by a member of the panel and a volunteer teacher in their own homes.

The closing date is generally the second week of November each year.

Year 12

In 2016 the Trustees of the Foundation decided to offer two means-tested 100% bursaries for young people entering Year 12 to cover the duration of their two years in sixth form at West Buckland. Decisions are made annually and the Trustees will only accept applications for pupils currently in Year 11. As with the Year 7 bursaries you must be a permanent resident within North Devon or Torridge district council areas or Exmoor National Park; and not have the financial means to send any of your children to West Buckland School.

Applicants must meet the school’s academic entrance criteria through sitting an assessment in January. Short listed applicants will be visited by two members of the panel in their own homes.

The closing date is generally the second week of November each year.
