I joined West Buckland in Year 12 and I am now in Year 13 studying English, biology and geography.

I was nervous when I first started but the members of my year made me feel at ease straight away. The atmosphere of the Sixth Form and wider school is welcoming and encourages you to try new things and enjoy yourself.

Studying A-levels is challenging but I feel supported by my teachers and am comfortable in the small class sizes to ask questions when I need to.

I chose to study A-levels at West Buckland as it not only offered excellent academic opportunities but also other broader aspects such as drama, music and sport with new, high tech facilities such as the 150 theatre.

A key aspect of the school is the house system which helps make the school an integrated unit across all years and there is also lots of camaraderie within the house through inter-house competitions.

The most important part for me though has been the people; both the teachers and my peers. You are immediately welcomed into the school and after a month I felt completely settled into the way of life with valuable friends I will keep for life.

On the whole I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here and would recommend it to anyone.

Taylor’s story…

I joined West Buckland in Year 12 after completing my GCSEs at the Braunton Academy.

I was slightly apprehensive at first yet I need not have worried as everyone was so welcoming. The support I was given in those early few weeks and months was crucial to me settling in and before long I felt really comfortable in my new environment.

West Buckland gave me so much more than just brilliant academic opportunities. I was made a Senior Prefect and during my two years I played first team rugby and cricket, whilst in the athletics squad I won a Devon Schools’ title and was senior Victor Ludorum.

One of my most exciting experiences was being part of the Fiddler on the Roof production. The musical placed me in at the ‘deep end’ and right out of my comfort zone; having to dance, sing and act in front of 300 people. The experience was hugely uplifting and I will never forget it.

After two great years at West Buckland I was delighted to achieve the A-level results required to study Exercise and Sports Sciences at the University of Exeter. Overall my time at West Buckland was truly fulfilling, gaining academic success, great memories and meeting many wonderful people.
