Welcome to the Preparatory School

Message from the Headmaster

School is all about exploration and creativity. It is vital that children become active learners, gain some independent thought, use their initiative and think for themselves about their work, their learning and the world around them.

West Buckland Preparatory School has traditional values at its core, but at the same time it is progressive. We believe that learning is something special and intrinsic, bubbling up from within. In the Prep School we try to make our science, maths, English and music as practical as possible.

All the children in the Prep School take part in music and drama productions every year. They gain confidence through performing to audiences of friends and parents. They all sing, they all act and they all have the opportunity to play instruments. There are clubs covering art, drama, music, sport, swimming, chess, Forest School, shooting and construction.

We encourage pupils to be imaginative, to think and to dream. They are children who enjoy their childhood. They play games and have fun. We have children who take their music to an extremely high level and have reached the dizzy heights of the National Children’s Orchestra, but we have others who simply love their music and will be playing their instruments for years to come, bringing joy to themselves and others. They will be the writers, the film-makers and the story-tellers of the future.

My wife and I have enjoyed many happy years at West Buckland. Our four children are past pupils and enjoyed all the opportunities it provided.   We hope that you will visit the school, meet some of the pupils and see for yourself whether our hopes and aims for the school are fulfilled.

I look forward to meeting you in the near future.
