West Buckland Performance Programmes

Our performance programmes provide students with the opportunity to access specialist coaching, helping them to develop their skills and levels of performance in a number of sports and activities.

From September 2015, we are pleased to offer performance and development programmes in tennis, volleyball and dance.

These are in addition to the wide ranging curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities available to all students.

What is it?

An exciting programme covering ballet, jazz & body conditioning. This programme is designed to give young dancers from Years 7 - 13 a full, diverse and enjoyable dance experience. Three 60 minute sessions will run each week after school and give an opportunity for young dancers to try a range of dance styles and become a more confident dancer.

Ballet Class

Participants will receive specialist ballet coaching. The syllabus will cover all the basic ballet principles which are needed to develop a solid foundation to all dance genres.

Jazz Class

The Jazz Dance programme is an exciting class offering students a range of current jazz dance styles. With an emphasis on a strong technical foundation, dancers will focus on the stylistic and performance aspects of dance.

Body Conditioning

Body conditioning classes will focus on developing the flexibility, strength, alignment, neuromuscular coordination and relaxation needed throughout the whole body which is fundamental to all young dancers’ training.

The dance performance programme is led by Mrs Vic Ford, an experienced teacher, professionally trained dance and an Associate of the Royal Academy of Dance.

Who is it for and how much does it cost?

The dance performance programme is open to any pupils with an interest in dance. Classes are charged at £3.50 per 60 minute session or £100 for three sessions each week over ten weeks.

The development of tennis at West Buckland School continues to go from strength to strength. Our tennis programme extends the amount of quality opportunities available to our young tennis players throughout the year and is designed to enable them to fulfil their tennis potential.

There are a range of programmes to suit different ages:

  1. Junior Development Programme (Ages 9 – 11)
  2. Junior Programme (Ages 12 – 14)
  3. Senior Programme (Ages 14+)

Players are coached by Chris Gill, a county coach and Head Coach at Tarka Tennis.  He is assisted by Rachel Thompson, Head of Tennis and games teacher at West Buckland.

What do the programmes provide?

Players are coached in a group setting, utilising the first class indoor and outdoor (with floodlights) facilities of the sport complex at West Buckland, centred on the Jonathan Edwards Sports Centre.

The aim of these programmes is to nurture and motivate players.  The programmes provide an opportunity for for new and for more experienced players to focus on tennis in a supportive and specialist environment.

Key aspects of the programme include:

  • Decision making
  • Technique
  • Shot selection
  • Movement Skills
  • Tactical awareness
  • Fitness training

When do the sessions run and who can join the tennis performance programme?

These programmes cater for all abilities and they are open to all students from Year 2 to Year 11.

Sixth form opportunities take place where there is limited impact upon study and are arranged separately throughout the school year.

The early morning sessions run from either 0730-0815 or from 0815 – 0900.

Flexi-boarding is available and is designed to help busy parents, as well as pupils, take advantage of the many extra-curricular opportunities that run outside of the normal school day.

Volleyball Performance Programme

We are pleased to launch an exciting volleyball performance programme for 2015-16. The programme provides a performance pathway for students studying at West Buckland School and gives them the opportunity to train and play in a volleyball team.  The programme is tailored to players of all ability levels.

During a typical school week, students on the programme are able to access up to four specific volleyball training sessions plus additional strength and conditioning sessions.  They then play competitive matches in the National Volleyball League, the South West League and in the Volleyball England U15, U16 and U18 cups.

For the 2015-16 season, the state of the art sports centre at West Buckland provides the ‘home’ venue for these matches.

Who are the coaches?

The programme is led by Volleyball England coach Denise Austin.  Denise is a former international player and has been coaching beach volleyball in the UK since 1995.  She has developed many of the top international players including Zara Dampney who played for Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympics.  Denise is currently Volleyball England National Junior Beach Volleyball Head Coach and is Head Coach of the Academy of Beach Sports in North Devon.

West Buckland also employs its own staff who are resident on site and nationally accredited volleyball coaches.

Denise has experience of working with international students studying in the UK and playing volleyball at a competitive level. Valeria Minaeva from Moscow came to the UK with a passion for Volleyball, discovered Denise’s Beach Academy and has been playing during 2014-15 in the Volleyball England U16 Cup.  The team reached the Cup Final at the National Training Centre in Kettering and won a gripping final against Richmond.  The match was streamed live which meant Valeria’s family and friends were able to watch her compete. She was also awarded the Golden Ball for the Player of the Match.

What exactly does the programme provide?

  1. Regular access to high quality volleyball sessions up to four times a week
  2. Regular competitive matches at weekends at the correct level of competition - National Volleyball League, South West League and or Volleyball England Junior Cups.
  3.  Students at 12+ have the opportunity to gain a Young Leaders' Award to instruct and organise sessions for the younger students.
  4. Students at 16 have the opportunity to gain their Level 1 coaching volleyball qualification.
  5. Conditioning support sessions to ensure players are physically prepared for the sport

The programme provides a supportive, nurturing, progressive and developmental environment to allow every student to enjoy the sport and reach their full potential.  It is open to both UK and international players.
