Sport

JESC

Students at West Buckland enjoy an impressive range of opportunities to enjoy sport and physical education, and to develop their skills to the full. Working with a team of specialist teachers in our outstanding facilities, our sportsmen and women take part in a diverse range of sports and represent the school in regular fixtures all over the South West. The reputation of West Buckland School for sport is very strong, and our students are frequently found in representative teams for North Devon, Devon, the South West and at national level.

The boys’ major sports are rugby, hockey and cricket, while our basketball players are very successful as well. The girls’ major sports are netball, hockey, rounders and tennis. In all of these, our teams have extensive and challenging fixture lists at all ages. Athletics and cross-country are considered relatively minor sports here yet we still have several competitors reaching the National Championships annually. Another area which is growing in popularity is the multi-event sport based around our indoor swimming pool, including biathlon, aquathon and triathlon.

Outdoor Learning

Students enjoy an exciting range of outdoor and adventurous activities throughout the year. West Buckland is situated in a part of the country which offers wonderful opportunities for climbing, kayaking, surfing and a great many other adventurous activities. The school has a strong commitment to offering students of all ages opportunities to enjoy these experiences and to develop their skills to a very high level. We value greatly the opportunities for personal development this aspect of our curriculum offers.

Many West Buckland students participate in Bronze, Silver and Gold levels of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and we enter two or three Ten Tors teams every year In the summer there is a major expedition either in the UK or overseas. The CCF programme also shares many of the aims and objectives of the Outdoor Education programme.

The Adventure Society

Adventure Society and Boarding Activities

West Buckland School has had a long history of nurturing students to develop a sense of adventure and team building, we have been involved in Ten Tors and the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme for over 40 years! The new Adventure Society is open to all pupils and builds upon our long association with Ten Tors and the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme, as well as our tradition of the ‘The Exmoor’ run and other highly successful outdoor activities.

The aims of the Adventure Society

We aim to embrace the unique and privileged location of the school– with Exmoor and Dartmoor National Parks as well as miles of coastland and beaches, all on our doorstep - to provide all students with fantastic opportunities for outdoor learning and adventure. These areas make excellent outdoor classrooms whilst enabling students to have a fun and enjoyable experience. Using these wild and natural environments, pupils start to learn through their own experiences: respecting their natural surroundings; challenging themselves and building upon their strengths mentally and physically; recognising their limitations and become enterprising and confident young people.

The Adventure Society co-ordinates a series of events and activities throughout the year to meet these aims.

Examples of activities include:

  • Indoor and outdoor climbing and bouldering, including entering competitions
  • Surfing and coast-steering
  • Paddle sports: kayaking and canoeing
  • Horse riding
  • Mountain biking
  • Bushcraft and environmental/ conservation work (The John Muir award)Archery
  • Team building activities including paintball/laser quest, go-karting, ice skating, art and crafts, visits to local tourist attractions.

School Life

School life for our senior pupils is a challenging and stimulating experience. Students are encouraged to stretch themselves in their academic work, to aim to reach their full potential and achieve qualifications which will give them the ability to make choices for their lives beyond school.

Education at West Buckland, however, is not just about the accumulation of examination certificates, important though they undoubtedly are. We are all absolutely committed to enabling our students at all ages to have a rich variety of experiences which will help them to develop as young adults.

We provide a huge range of sporting, cultural and outdoor opportunities for all students. Our latest ISI Inspection concluded, “the provision of extra-curricular activities is outstanding and enriches the pupils’ experience significantly.” To see an example of the extra-curricular activity timetable, please see the document below.

Music

Music plays an enormous part in the life of West Buckland School. There is something for everyone, ranging from the gifted musicians who aim to make music their careers right down to the enthusiastic beginners who are enjoying the fun of singing and playing, and sharing music with others.

Ensembles

At West Buckland we believe that music-making should be a social activity, and that whilst individual practice is vital, there is also a lot of progress to be made through making music with others. It is for this reason that pupils are strongly encouraged to participate in our comprehensive ensemble programme.

Chamber Choir

(Year 10 and above with approximately 120 members) The choir performs up to nine church services a year and have a mainly sacred repertoire, although in 2007 they performed Purcell's opera 'Dido and Aeneas'. The Chamber Choir always concludes its year with a large scale choral work accompanied by a professional orchestra.

Chamber Orchestra

(Year 10 and above with approximately 25 members) The orchestra performs original works from the 18th Century (Bach, Mozart and Haydn) as well as some more modern works.

Senior Concert Band

(Year 10 and above with approximately 45 members) The band performs arrangements of popular classical works, as well as marches and jazz influenced pieces.

WBJ (West Buckland Jazz)

(Year 10 and above with approximately 20+ members) The band performs a repertoire of jazz standards from the swing era.

String Quartet

(Year 10 and above) Senior string players at Grade 7 and above.

North Devon Sinfonia

(Approximately 50 to 70 members) This is a local full-scale symphony orchestra which is directed by Director of Music Emma Kent. It performs four concerts a year and specialises in Romantic and 20th Century repertoire. String players who are Grade 7 and above and wind and brass players who are Grade 8 and above may join, subject to audition. This ensemble ensures that our more talented players are stretched to their full ability and given the opportunity to perform in a full-scale symphony orchestra on a regular basis.

Junior Boys’ Choir

(Years 7 to 9 with approximately 20 members) This three-part harmony choir (SSA) performs mainly popular song arrangements.

Junior Girls’ Choir

(Years 7 to 9 with approximately 35 members) This three-part harmony choir (SSA) performs popular and classical repertoire.

Junior Concert Band

(Years 7 to 9 with approximately 20+ members) This wind band performs a mixture of popular and jazz influenced pieces.

Junior String Orchestra

(Years 7 to 9 with approximately 20 to 30 members) A full string orchestra, including violas and double basses, performs a selection of popular arrangements of well known tunes.

Samba Band

(Years 7 to 9 with approximately 20 members) This percussion group plays grooves from Brazil using authentic samba instruments.

Guitar Group
