Scholarships & Bursaries

West Buckland aims to be as accessible as possible to boys and girls who would benefit from the education and all round academic, cultural, sporting and extra-curricular opportunities.

The Governors of the school recognise that many of its parents have to make significant personal sacrifices to secure their children’s education. School fees are reviewed annually and are set at levels which represent excellent value for money in light of the opportunities provided by the school.

In some instances, fee remission is available to families applying to West Buckland. Our financial awards fall into two categories, scholarships awards and bursaries.

Scholarships

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of excellence in academia. Awards are not means-tested and are open to internal and external candidates.

Each year scholarship awards available across the two year groups – Year 7 and Year 12.

All awards are reviewed annually and are tenable until the end of Year 11 for 11+ awards, or the end of Year 13 for 16+. Pupils awarded a scholarship will be expected to perform strongly in the area of their award and make a significant contribution to the life of the school in general.

Interviews for students who are short-listed take place on Saturday 17th November 2018. This comprises of a thirty-minute academic meeting with the Sixth Form Interview Panel and a thirty-minute interview with the Headmaster.

Structure of the Academic Awards

Academic Scholarship – a title which is awarded for excellence in academic attainment, progress and potential. This will be awarded to a very small group of students. Successful academic scholars will also receive a Headmaster’s Award.

Headmaster’s Award – a financial award granted to students who are performing well academically, have the potential to make further progress and will make a positive contribution to the Sixth Form. The size of the award is at the discretion of the Headmaster.

Expectations

Students who accept the offer of an Academic Award are expected to maintain an excellent attitude to learning throughout their time in the Sixth Form. This will apply to learning in class, homework set by their teachers, independent learning and a commitment to attend super-curricular events and activities such as lectures, conferences and in-school societies.

Students who accept the offer of an Academic Scholarship are expected to fulfil the above requirements, but there are additional commitments to broader and deeper independent learning and full attendance at events and activities under the direction of the Head of Academic Extension.

If Academic Scholars do not fulfil the expectations outlined above, it is possible that the ‘title’ will be removed, and it will revert to a Headmaster’s Award.

The Governors are committed to maintaining the breadth of access to West Buckland School by offering to eligible parents/guardians means-tested financial support for the payment of school fees.

Any award is dependent upon academic performance, commitment to the life of the school, and financial need. Such support is known as a Bursary and these may be awarded in the form of a reduction on tuition fees payable, depending on the financial needs and any other relevant circumstances of applicants.

Bursaries

Bursaries are considered only after parents have completed a confidential statement of financial circumstances. This must be accompanied by a letter giving supporting information about the family circumstances now as well as some indication of how these circumstances may develop in the future. Details of bursary awards must remain confidential and any breach by parents may lead to withdrawal of any award offered. All bursaries are subject to annual reassessment and families are required to submit a new statement of financial circumstances by 1st May each year. Any applications received after this date cannot be considered for renewal.

Parents are expected to provide supporting documentation on request. Failure to do so or wilful provision of misleading information will result in the withdrawal of a bursary.
