Welcome to West Buckland

The leading independent school in North Devon

West Buckland School was founded in 1858 and is an independent co-ed day and boarding school set in 100 acres of beautiful North Devon countryside in the South West of England.

Today, West Buckland is a vibrant school with a strong supportive community, welcoming 600 children aged from three to eighteen years into our Nursery, Preparatory, Senior School and Sixth Form.

Teaching is challenging and stimulating, and the school has a consistently high record of academic achievement. Our students also benefit from exceptional opportunities in sport, music, the performing arts and a whole host of other extra-curricular activities.

The aims and ethos of our school are to enable all pupils to develop the personal qualities, abilities and values which will prepare them to make the most of their own lives and to contribute to society.

Student Profiles

  • Reuben - Year 9

    Reuben Windley profile

My name is Reuben and I am in Year 9. I have been at West Buckland School since I was four years old.

What I love about this school is how busy it keeps me! There is so much to do and so many opportunities to try new things. I am a keen sportsman and musician but I also love playing chess and singing in the Junior Boys Choir. I can do all of these things here at school because of the great facilities and enthusiastic and dedicated teachers. Doing all this means I get to meet lots of people of different nationalities and ages and learn many positive things from these experiences.

As I progress through school I look forward to the challenges that the Outdoor Adventure Department offers and hope to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and The Ten Tors Challenge. I know I am very lucky to be studying here.

Parent Testimonials

  • Sussie and Malcolm Podmore (2001 – present) Prep and Senior School

    podmore

From 2001 and up to 2017 West Buckland Prep and Senior School have provided very happy, positive, all-round educational experiences for all three of our children. Although each of them is so different, West Buckland has provided a variety of opportunities to match their wide ranging needs in sport, music, art, drama, languages and many extracurricular activities, such as the Duke of Edinburgh scheme and a recent trip to New York.

The children were fortunate to have been at the school at the right time to benefit from the new sports hall, 150 building and, now, the sixth form boarding house.

The quality of pastoral care throughout has been routinely high and has helped Freddie, Arabella and Millie to become independent, balanced individuals equipped to embark on their lives beyond school.
